The IRS has begun mandatory PTIN registration. All paid tax preparers must register their existing PTIN or obtain a new one by 1/1/2011 in order to prepare taxes for compensation. The fastest way to register is online at IRS ONLINE PTIN REGISTRATION.  The total fee’s are $64.25. $50 to the IRS and $14.25 to an online vendor ( Accenture) to maintain the  records.

After registration is complete all tax preparers (except enrolled agents, CPA’s, and attorneys) will have to pass an IRS Competency Exam. This exam will cover Wage & Non Business Income and will start to be administered in October of 2011 through Prometric.  If you do not pass this exam you will be limited to the types of 1040’s you can file.

The IRS will also require preparers to complete 15 hours of continuing education per year. The IRS has yet to determine when this will be implemented. To get the latest updates on being a registered tax preparer, please register on our website by giving us your name and email address.
